Rhine River Cruise: Castles, Wine, and Fairy-Tale Villages

Before I became a travel advisor, I was a flight attendant for 15 years. I flew to a lot of European cities, but I never had the time to really explore them. When I finally took a Rhine river cruise, I understood what I'd been missing.

The Rhine is different from the Danube. Where the Danube is grand and imperial, the Rhine is romantic and storybook. The Middle Rhine Gorge — a 65-kilometer stretch of river between Koblenz and Bingen — is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe, with medieval castles on nearly every hilltop and vineyard-covered slopes dropping to the river's edge.

It's the kind of scenery that makes you feel like you've stepped into a fairy tale.

The Rhine Cruise Route

Most Rhine river cruises run between Amsterdam (or Basel) and one of the German cities, covering the most scenic stretches of the river. Here's what you'll see:

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Many Rhine cruises begin or end in Amsterdam, and the city deserves at least two days. The canal houses, the Rijksmuseum (home to Rembrandt's Night Watch), the Van Gogh Museum, and the Anne Frank House are all extraordinary.

Rent a bicycle and explore the city like a local. Amsterdam is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world.

Cologne, Germany

Cologne's Gothic cathedral (Kölner Dom) is one of the most impressive buildings in Europe — it took 632 years to complete and dominates the city skyline. The Christmas market in the cathedral square is one of Germany's most beautiful.

The city also has an excellent museum scene and a vibrant food and bar culture.

The Middle Rhine Gorge

This is the highlight of any Rhine cruise. The gorge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and sailing through it is one of the most spectacular river experiences in the world.

Lorelei Rock — A famous slate rock where, according to legend, a siren lured sailors to their deaths. The views from the rock are stunning.

Marksburg Castle — The only Rhine castle that was never destroyed. Tours are available and highly recommended.

Bacharach — A perfectly preserved medieval town with half-timbered houses, ancient walls, and excellent Riesling wine.

Rüdesheim — Famous for its Drosselgasse (a narrow lane packed with wine taverns) and the Niederwald Monument overlooking the river.

Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe — a unique blend of French and German culture, with a stunning Gothic cathedral, a charming old town (La Petite France), and some of the best food in France.

The Christmas market in Strasbourg is the oldest in France (dating to 1570) and one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Basel, Switzerland

Basel is a sophisticated Swiss city with an extraordinary museum scene (over 40 museums for a city of 180,000 people), a beautiful old town, and excellent food. It's also the gateway to the Swiss Alps.

The Wine

The Rhine Valley produces some of Germany's finest wines, particularly Riesling. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Rheingau and Mosel regions produce wines of extraordinary elegance and complexity.

Most river cruise lines include wine with meals, and many offer wine-focused excursions — visits to local wineries, tastings with winemakers, and wine-pairing dinners. AmaWaterways is particularly excellent for wine-focused cruising.

The Christmas Markets

If you're considering a Rhine cruise in November or December, the Christmas markets are extraordinary. Cologne, Strasbourg, and Basel all have famous markets, and the combination of twinkling lights, mulled wine (Glühwein), and medieval architecture is absolutely magical.

Practical Tips

Best time: May through June and September through November for scenery and weather. December for Christmas markets.

Active options: Many Rhine cruise lines offer cycling excursions along the river path. The Rhine Cycle Route is one of Europe's great cycling routes.

Packing: Layers are essential — the Rhine Valley can be cool even in summer. Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets.

Photography: The Middle Rhine Gorge is one of the most photogenic stretches of river in the world. Keep your camera accessible.
