Planning the Perfect Mexico Honeymoon

Planning a honeymoon is one of the most exciting — and occasionally overwhelming — things you'll do as a newly engaged couple. There are so many options, so many opinions, and so much pressure to get it right.

Here's the good news: Mexico is one of the best honeymoon destinations in the world, and with the right guidance, planning it doesn't have to be stressful. That's what I'm here for.

Why Mexico for a Honeymoon?

Mexico offers an extraordinary combination of romance, beauty, and value. You can have a genuinely luxurious honeymoon experience — overwater bungalows, private beach dinners, couples spa treatments — at a fraction of what you'd pay in the Maldives or Bora Bora.

It's also easy to get to from the US, with direct flights from most major cities. That means more time on the beach and less time in airports.

Choosing Your Destination

Riviera Maya: My Top Honeymoon Recommendation

The Riviera Maya — particularly the stretch between Playa del Carmen and Tulum — is my top recommendation for honeymooners. The combination of beautiful beaches, lush jungle, ancient ruins, and world-class resorts creates a backdrop that's genuinely romantic.

Best honeymoon resorts in the Riviera Maya:

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya — Adults-only, beautiful beach, excellent snorkeling right off the shore. The swim-out suites are extraordinary.

Excellence Playa Mujeres — One of the most beautiful resorts I've ever visited. The architecture, the gardens, the beach — everything is stunning. Perfect for honeymooners.

Rosewood Mayakoba — If budget is not a concern, this is the pinnacle of Riviera Maya luxury. Set in a lagoon ecosystem with overwater villas, it's one of the most romantic resorts in Mexico.

Los Cabos: Drama and Luxury

For couples who want drama and luxury, Los Cabos is extraordinary. The desert-meets-sea landscape is unlike anything else in Mexico, and the resorts here are some of the most spectacular in the country.

Best honeymoon resorts in Los Cabos:

One&Only Palmilla — The original luxury resort in Cabo, with impeccable service and a beautiful beach.

Chileno Bay Resort — Boutique, intimate, and set on one of the best swimming beaches in Cabo.

Las Ventanas al Paraíso — Ultra-luxury with extraordinary personalized service. They'll arrange a private beach dinner under the stars, a sunrise yoga session, or a private tequila tasting — whatever makes your honeymoon perfect.

The Honeymoon Perks

One of the best things about booking a honeymoon through a travel advisor: the perks. Many resorts offer complimentary honeymoon amenities when you book through an advisor:

  • Room upgrades (often to a suite)
  • Welcome amenity (champagne, flowers, chocolates)
  • Private beach or pool dinner
  • Couples spa treatment
  • Late checkout

I always make sure my honeymoon clients receive every perk available. It's one of the most satisfying parts of my job.

The Romantic Experiences

Beyond the resort, Mexico offers some extraordinary romantic experiences:

Private cenote tour — Arrange a private tour of a cenote for just the two of you. Swimming in crystal-clear water in a private underground cave is genuinely magical.

Sunset sailing — A private catamaran charter at sunset, with champagne and fresh ceviche. One of the most romantic things you can do in Mexico.

Temazcal ceremony — A traditional Mayan sweat lodge ceremony. Intense, spiritual, and deeply bonding.

Cooking class — Learn to make traditional Mexican dishes together. A fun, intimate experience that gives you a skill to take home.

Stargazing — Away from city lights, the Mexican sky is extraordinary. Many resorts offer private stargazing experiences.

Practical Honeymoon Tips

Tell everyone it's your honeymoon — Tell the airline, the hotel, the restaurant. People love to celebrate newlyweds, and you'll often receive unexpected upgrades and treats.

Book in advance — The best honeymoon suites and the most romantic restaurants book up months in advance. Don't leave this to the last minute.

Consider a "mini-moon" now, big trip later — If you're getting married in peak season and the budget is tight, consider a shorter Mexico honeymoon now and a bigger trip (Europe, Maldives) for your first anniversary.

Travel insurance — Always, always, always. Especially for a honeymoon.

Unplug — I know it's tempting to document everything for Instagram, but some moments are better experienced than photographed. Put the phone down sometimes.

Your honeymoon is one of the most special trips of your life. Let me help you make it perfect.
