Why Cabo San Lucas Should Be on Your Bucket List

There is a moment when you're flying into Los Cabos — the plane banks over the tip of the Baja Peninsula, and suddenly you see it: the Pacific Ocean on one side, the Sea of Cortez on the other, and the dramatic desert landscape stretching as far as the eye can see. I've made that approach dozens of times, and it still takes my breath away every single time.

Cabo San Lucas is different from every other Mexico destination. It's wilder, more dramatic, and in many ways more luxurious. Here's why it deserves a spot on your travel list.

The Arch: Cabo's Most Iconic Landmark

El Arco — the famous natural rock arch at Land's End — is the symbol of Cabo, and it's even more stunning in person than in photos. You can see it from the beach, but the best way to experience it is by water taxi or glass-bottom boat from the marina.

The beach at the base of the arch (Playa del Amor, or Lover's Beach) is one of the most beautiful and unique beaches in Mexico. One side faces the calm Sea of Cortez; the other faces the crashing Pacific. You can literally stand with one foot in each ocean.

The Resorts: A Cut Above

Cabo's resort scene is genuinely world-class. The corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo is lined with some of the most spectacular properties in all of Mexico — and many of them are adults-only.

Some of my current favorites:

Nobu Hotel Los Cabos — Sleek, modern, and the food is extraordinary. The Nobu restaurant alone is worth the trip.

One&Only Palmilla — The original luxury resort in Cabo, and still one of the best. Impeccable service, stunning architecture, and a beach that feels like your own private paradise.

Chileno Bay Resort — Boutique, intimate, and set on one of the best swimming beaches in Cabo. This is my go-to recommendation for couples who want something special.

Marquis Los Cabos — Adults-only, all-inclusive, and absolutely gorgeous. The infinity pools overlooking the Sea of Cortez are iconic.

Deep-Sea Fishing: A Cabo Tradition

Cabo is one of the world's premier sport fishing destinations. The waters off the tip of Baja are home to marlin, dorado, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and more. Whether you're an experienced angler or a complete beginner, a fishing charter is one of the quintessential Cabo experiences.

Half-day and full-day charters are available from the marina, and many resorts can arrange them for you. I always recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season.

The Food Scene

Cabo's restaurant scene has exploded in recent years. Beyond the resort restaurants, the town is packed with incredible dining options:

The Office on the Beach — Literally on the sand in downtown Cabo. Margaritas, fresh seafood, and your toes in the sand. A Cabo institution.

Edith's — Romantic, candlelit, and famous for their tableside guacamole and flambéed desserts.

Acre — Set in a mango orchard in San José del Cabo, this farm-to-table restaurant is one of the most beautiful dining experiences in all of Mexico.

Whale Watching (December–April)

If you're visiting between December and April, you have a chance to witness one of nature's most spectacular events: gray whale migration. Thousands of gray whales travel from Alaska to the warm lagoons of Baja California to give birth, and the waters around Cabo are right in their path.

Whale watching tours depart from the marina daily during season, and sightings are almost guaranteed. I've been on these tours multiple times and it never gets old.

Getting Around

Cabo is very walkable in the downtown area, but you'll want transportation to reach resorts along the corridor or San José del Cabo. Uber is available and reliable. Many resorts offer shuttle service to town.

Important: Always use official taxis or Uber. Avoid accepting rides from unmarked vehicles.

When to Go

Cabo is a year-round destination, but the sweet spot is October through May — warm, sunny, and low humidity. June through September is hot and humid, with the occasional tropical storm. Hurricane risk is real but manageable; I'll always advise you on timing.

The Bottom Line

Cabo is for the traveler who wants more than just a beach vacation. It's for the person who wants to wake up to a desert sunrise, spend the day on the water, eat an incredible dinner, and fall asleep to the sound of the Pacific. It's dramatic, beautiful, and unlike anywhere else in Mexico.
